Penington Friends house
Welcome to the Penington Friends House! This is a collaborative residence run by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) which occupies one of five single-family brownstones built in a row along 15th Street by the family of Peter Stuyvesant. The property was once called the Great Bouwerie and extended from present day 5th Avenue to 17th Street. In 1987, The Quakers purchased the building and maintained it as a formal residence until the 1980’s when it became a collaborative living house.
The brownstone may have been designed by influential Architect Richard Morris Hunt, who was known as the father of Beaux Arts architecture in the United States. Lavish moldings, the use of tudor roses in the ceiling all complement the neo-classic design of the building. There is a grand double parlor with 14 foot ceilings and moldings which are well preserved and recent renovations have restored much of its early splendor of the building.
The building has a basement kitchen where residents gather for breakfast and dinner and there are bedrooms available for short- and long-term rentals on the second, third and 4th floors. Contact us for information about shooting at Penington House.
